Apparently the Arizona legislature (both houses) passed bills that would require any person seeking to be on the presidential ballot in Arizona to provide some verification that they indeed meet the eligibility rules listed in the Constitution for the office of President. I also understand that apparently the governor of Arizona vetoed said bill(s). I also understand why she might feel that baptismal or circumcision records as a form of identification is reaching a bit.
I think everyone knows that this is built upon the theory that our current president was not born in the United States. I see in the news that he has presented his "long form" birth certificate. Already there are a bunch of people saying, hey, its a forgery. Some people will never be satisfied - it is always a conspiracy. I know one of those people...
Back to the point: I strongly believe that any person running for office should have to demonstrate eligibility for the office, prior to running. Dog catcher or President - if there are eligibility requirements, then the person seeking the office has to prove eligibility. For City Council here in Corinth, you have to have been a resident in the city for at least one year, be a qualified voter (registered in the state of Texas and the city in other words), and be 21 years old. So, if you run for council, you should have a valid drivers license, be legally registered to vote, and have about 12 months of utility bills for your address. I don't see anything wrong with that.
And if you are running for president, senator, or congressman, I see no reason that you shouldn't have to provide proof you are eligible for those offices to be placed on the ballot. Does that mean you should have to show your circumcision documentation to the news media? Um, no (rephrase - hell no). It means that for the office of president, you would have to show a birth certificate (or here in Texas a valid driver's license, which you had to have a birth certificate to get) to the secretary of state, or his/her designee. Not every idiot that wants to see a copy of it. There is a point where things become silly.
We may be at that point vis a vis the current president and his birth certificate. Time to move on.
